When I try to convert someone to the Church of BanCar, the arguments that I emphasize depend on the situation. But for me, these are the top 5 arguments in favor of forbidding cars at least in cities (the order has changed over the last 2 years, after doing some research) :
#1 - Money. Holy Crash, what an insane amount of money we (as a society and individuals) are pouring into this nightmare. It swallows 15-20% of GDP in "developed" countries (not only cars, but also giant space-consuming suburbs). Technically, we could fund universal healthcare, UBI, medical research and get rid of the debt in no time. This is criminal.
#2 - Deaths and injuries. 1 million fatal collisions worldwide, #1 cause of death among young people. The numbers speak for themselves.
#3 - Poor health related to noise, pollution and sedentary lifestyles. In terms of disabilities and deaths, this might be even worse than #2. (but impacts old people, so less life years).
#4 - Waste of time. This is closely related to #1 (we work one day per week on average to fund our dependency) but in general, car journeys are actually time consuming, especially in dense areas. Moreover, traffic jams block emergency vehicles (see #3) and the time spent driving is not really "leisure" : you need to look at the road continuously, only 2 seconds of inattention could send you in jail or in the hospital.
#5 - Stress. Because of #1 and #2 and #4, driving is stressful, which make people violent and irrational. But the stress generated by fast and numerous motor vehicles is also felt by pedestrians and residents. Kids and older people don't feel secure on the streets.

>> I know that "most people in America can't afford to get rid of their car" because of urban sprawl and they have kids and a large garden and so on. But life is made of choices, and some choices are hard. We're not in a matrix. America has reinvented itself many times.
