Yesterday someone told me I was too old to be in college
Post Body

Iā€™m 28 and in my sophomore year of college. I havenā€™t made any friends yet. I went out socializing yesterday and I met some people. We were talking and they ended up asking me my age I told them 28 and one of the guys was like arenā€™t you a bit old to be in college are you a grad student or something? I said no and he was like oh. As time passed they all slowly started to move away from me. It makes me feel like the weird. I feel like I failed at life starting college so late. I was in the military and I wasnā€™t able to get my degree unfortunately. I feel like I wonā€™t be able to make friends because of my age. Should I just put my head down and just finish.

Hell Nah, you do you. People are so judgmental for no reason, you just got to stay positive.

This is me giving input as a student, not as a staff member - as an older undergrad (I went back to school at 26 and finished at 29) I just put my head down and finished. I found other ways to socialize in Tallahassee with folks my age. I joined masters sports teams, public clubs, and made friends with coworkers. My classmates were always nice and I'm sure there are some I could have connected with meaningfully, but the age and life stage divide felt significant enough that I didn't have the energy to try.

Here's my advice as a staff member - did you transfer here? Transfer Student Services has built a lot of new programming for students to meet each other since I graduated, and they may have more students who are either around your age or not so entrenched in "traditional" college that they find the age difference offputting. I'd encourage you to plug in with them!

Whatever you would like to call what you said itā€™s still unnecessary. Additionally, you cant generalize by saying ā€œcollegeā€ has zero support systems. Since we are here in the FSU subreddit, I would like to state that FSU has many available resources. I myself have used them multiple times to resolve financial, mental and physical concerns. Not only that but using these resources hasnā€™t costed me a cent. If you have faced negative experiences with ā€œcollegesā€ then I could maybe understand where your coming from. But you should know there are always resources available and your are not alone.

I donā€™t think this is really the time or place for your political opinion. Saying High-schoolā€ used to be greatā€ is a matter of perspective. Sure they have problems but you have to do the best with what you got and stop blaming things on what you call a ā€œhellscapeā€. While I respect your opinion, Im trying to spread positivity not pin it on something specifically.
