I recently came to acquire a beautiful 2014 F150 Platinum dressed in tuxedo black. During my test drive, I heard a weird noise from the driver side on acceleration. I still bought the truck, it was a decent price, and I've always wanted one, so here we are.
I then found out the truck has a banks power intake and a tuner, so I figured the noise was just more intake noises due to the less restrictive airflow.
Come to find out, after some research, that super awesome noises the turbo makes on hard acceleration aren't actually all that super awesome, and I fear I may have some broken manifold bolts (i've honestly been scared to look, but i will when it warms up). This is no surprise with my luck, my first truck was a 2008 f150 with the 3V Triton, and less than two months after purchase (purchase of that truck was probably 6 years ago), I had to do cam phasers and lockouts on it. It's clear my budget is 10 year old Fords with factory issues 😅 that's okay.
My question is, I don't want to pay a dealership to do it. But every video I've seen about a dealership or other shop doing that repair, they either drop the motor or remove the cab. Has anyone here done this repair on their own? I'll have access to a hoist if needed, and a decent 4-ton Jack, but I don't have a lift. I have a moderate working knowledge of repairs, I did those cam phasers myself with a buddy. But is it worth it to tackle it myself? I have a company truck, so I'm not worried about my only vehicle being out of commission for a while.
I called Ford, they offer updated manifolds, but those both only use 9 studs. The originals use 8. I've found a set of aftermarket manifolds that (allegedly) have better flow than stock, and they also use all 11 studs on each side that the factory block ALREADY HAD IN IT, but that's a rant for another day. I'll link to the store page for them if anybody else wants to look at them.
I've also been recommended to replace the fittings for the turbo oil feeds and coolant lines, but I can't find a solid motorcraft part number for them, so I'd anyone could help me locate or identify them, I'd super appreciate that!
Thanks for taking the time to read my novel, and for your inputs as well!
