I've hunted Archery/1r and 4r in CO. I enjoy eating elk- This is the first year I actually drew an either sex tag for 1R- I've heard folks comment that the internal chemistry of the rut changes the taste of a bull harvested during/following the rut- I've always taken cows early rifle season-I have consumed one bull taken in 4r and didn't really notice a difference- Antlers are of little concern to me-it's about the meat! so if you had your choice-would you harvest a bull or a cow in early Oct?- (I get that there's more meat w/ taking a bigger guy) Just curious about folks' experience w/ culinary quality coming out of the late/post rut...
