Boss wants me to sand the paper off our butt joints.

Apartment maintenance guy and regular contributor to this wonderful subreddit here.
This apartment flooded out because the boss pulled the dishwasher but the shut off valve was leaking by and the place was left alone for a few weeks. He came by, cleaned up the water but didn't fix the leak. A week later I come in to start demoing and find it flooded again.
Anyways. He wants me to cut out the bad drywall, hang new stuff and run a palm sander across the butt joints to remove the paper make our own tapered joints. Then patch with mesh tape and hot mud.
I just can't even. Why is he my boss?
