Why do people invert splashes on top of crashes?

Possibly a dumb question, but what’s the benefit of this? Is it meant to enhance the crash or do you hit the inverted splash directly? And if the latter, does it affect the sound of the crash? Asking cos I’ve seen it in vids/pics online but never understood why.
