Mother had a very large life insurance policy courtesy of her parents, whom you hadn't spoken to since the funeral. At least we wouldn't starve.

One day, when I come home from school, there is a huge truck in front of the house from a scientific supply company. Big crates and small boxes are being carried downstairs to the large unfinished basement. This goes on for several days, punctuated by a large iron door with impressive looking locks replacing the thin wooden one.

Months pass. I don't see you at all. I hear noises from the basement, and I see signs of your sandwich making, but no sign of my father.

One morning, just after the beginning of summer vacation, I wake up to the smell of breakfast cooking. I pull on a tank top and denim skirt and come downstairs, eyes widening in surprise as a clean shaven, freshly showered, dressed for the day man is humming as he takes bacon out of the skillet.

"Dad?" I say, incredulously. With the exception of a few gray hairs, you look like the dad I remember from the the good old days, back when we went on family outings.
