Can we come out at the end of the survey with a list of statements...
Yes you can comment on posts
Hey we actually argue all the time and compromise on ideas for the sub

vookitty
I really think that the 'We keep it away from the kids' thing is the best statement on it

el
I DISAGREE
;)

vookitty
OH GOD DAMN IT

el
makes sure kids are asleep

vookitty
WHEN WILL THE SCREAMING END?! I'VE GONE OVER THIS SO MANY TIMES ALREADY!
I'M MAKING LASAGNA FOR DINNER AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME!
Storms out

el
The thing is, it might role model exactly what we're asking the sub as a whole to do: put aside some of your personal aesthetic preferences for the good of the community.

rdrp
Exactly

el
A mod team can't function if nobody is willing to give an inch.
Neither can a community.
Or a subreddit.

rdrp
It's hard to convince people to compromise.

octothorpe
I LEARNED IT FROM YOU DPP-DAD. ... Hm. unfortunate implications. Unless you're into that I suppose.

vookitty
DPP-Daddy. I'm surprised I haven't seen that username about
Though I'm sure it exists. Or will shortly.

rdrp
Pretty sure I've seen something like it

vookitty
Oh damn it. It's a deleted account.
Curse you [Deleted]!
Ahem. Anyway.

rdrp
Heh. It'd be hilariously meta to post this exchange.

octothorpe
I would be open to one of our round tables being a discussion on how and when the mod team agrees/disagrees.

rdrp
A debate about posting a debate

octothorpe
"Why does it take the mod team forever to do things?"
"Gather around children and we'll show you exactly why."

el
draws elaborate diagram
burns it in a fit of rage

rdrp
Haha

mouse
cooks a marshmallow on the fire

vookitty
I expect that diagram would just end up drawing a pentagram

rdrp
Hail Satan, voo.

octothorpe
The next round table is the 19th. I can try to put together something for it
With the topic "How the Mod Team Decides Things"

vookitty
I am this close to copy/pasting that quote from Kingsman

octothorpe
I promise it will only be 30% jokes about incest.

vookitty
70% serious discussion about incest

octothorpe
Exactly!

el
Keep it in the family, dear.

mouse
I think that is a great idea

octothorpe
You realize if there is a DPP-Daddy, it's you L. Just sayin'

Consider that a formal request to call Love-Bot “DPP Daddy.” From most of the mod team. He loves it, we promise.

Today's roundtable will be a bit of getting to know your mods and on how some things are run behind the scenes here at DPP. We've been keeping an eye on the survey and the comments in the thread there, and there have been a few questions about how we decide things, how much we do, and concerns about us all believing the same thing.

We spent a fair amount of time chuckling about that.

The DPP mod team uses Slack to communicate, and most of us have it up and open for at least a few hours every day. We use slack to discuss posts that are borderline breaking the rules, what rules we should add/relax, what the events should be each month, scheduling who should write what, and just generally chatting and/or bitching about our lives.

We don't always get along. Almost all the mods have at least one rule they disagree with and fought against; several of us lament the need for several of the rules but accept the necessity of having them. Whenever one of us links a post from the mod queue we aren't sure about, there’s a decent chance a debate will spring up about what should be done about it and whether it should stay up or not. Sometimes those debates get super heated; there are some strong personalities on the mod team and being a mod necessitates the ability to take some heat without backing down.

But in the end, we always come to a conclusion together, and that conclusion is what we present to the subreddit. During posts or decisions we know might be controversial, we'll take turns offering to respond and even send our responses to slack before posting them on the board; I will be putting this very post up to be reviewed before it goes live. That way, we all have our say about what is said for the group. We realize that when one of us speaks, it is usually speaking for all of us. So it's important to respect each other enough to check that what we say is at least acceptable to everyone we're speaking for.

That isn't to say we're always fighting; moderating can be super stressful, and we support each other through some of our more difficult users or particularly stubborn rule breakers. While we're not going to expand on how we catch as many people as we do, we have several serial rule breakers who just keep coming back, trying to spam the board. We do our best to catch them and keep them at bay, and while 70% of people have posts removed are usually pretty good about it, those last 30%... woooo boy.

This isn't to say we get everything right; we're constantly revisiting things internally, asking if we have it right or if we need to change our stance. We do our best to help people when we can and to make people feel welcome, but when our main job is to manage and enforce rules, we often come off as Uptight Busybodies.

Today we're going to be as open as possible. Ask us about how we reach decisions and, provided it won't help anyone get around some of the systems we have in place, we'll be as open as we can. Sadly, we can't be open about our individual opinions--this ends up encouraging a thing we call "mod-shopping" unfortunately--but we'll be open about disagreements the mod team has.

A couple of us will also post in the comments below, giving a little bio about ourselves and opening up to questions on ourselves and our own DPP opinions if we think we can safely share them. We won't always be able to answer everything--please don't ask us information that could help people dox us--but it's a chance for anyone to just get to know the people who try to stem the tide of spam.

Thanks everyone who plays and posts on DPP. We're all here because we love this place and love to help the people in it. The job might be really rough at times, but the vast majority of the people here make it constantly worth the work. So cheers to all of you and we look forward to your questions.
