Hey All!
Been wanting to talk about some of the things that I love about DBS as well as some of the things that bother me, but none of my friends really watch it or care, so I turn to you, the great interwebs!
I briefly read the rules and this didn't seem to contradict them, if it does please let me know and I will delete the post rather than a no-warning ban or whatever. Thanks! :)
First up:
THE GOOD
There are some great moments in DBS. Like, super great scenes mixed in the fighting and whatnot. Here are a few examples (again, spoilers for those who haven't watched the subbed version):
-
- This was, to me, hands down the funniest moment of Dragon Ball I can remember. The look on Goku's face when he's "threatening" to press the button, Beerus commanding him not to, then the look on his face AGAIN with the playful tone of "Fooled you!" as he disappears. Loved it. This is my current "happy place" and I'll go back to it if I'm ever frustrated or whatever, haha.
Episode 105 Spoiler: When Master Roshi after being a badass for the entire episode.
Lots of emotional moments during the Zamasu/Goku Black arc. Like, lots. And every one of them hurt, but in a good way. They did a fantastic job on the emotional impact of these episodes. Great arc, if a bit long.
Majin Buu in the Tournament of Power - Without giving away the spoiler tag, I thought that twist was extremely well done and offers a lot of plot points that can be exploited on down the line (as will happen in the next two or three episodes).
-
- Waifu status.
Minor Spoiler for Gohan's Desires
- This is badass, if they follow through. That's a big IF (see bad/ridiculous below).
There are a lot more, what were your favorite moments!?
THE BAD
A lot of this will be controversial, I imagine. I'll try to remain civil if you do the same! ;)
First off - Gohan.
This guy, man. It's more the creators, actually. Gohan was a badass up until the end of the Cell Games saga when he just became a blundering idiot. Apparently I've heard that the creators wanted the story to shift to Gohan (sort of a "passing of the torch"), but the producers put a stop to it or something. Per /u/vlorsutes it was all Toriyama's doing - he had an idea for Gohan to have a larger role and then trashed the idea. Either way, huge mistake in my opinion.
Goku mentions back in the Cell Games saga that Gohan would surpass them all (sounding like foreshadowing), and he did for a while! FIRST to reach SSJ2! And then he just...doesn't, because he'd rather go to school than, you know, make sure the world is safe. Logically that makes sense, but in the universe of Dragon Ball, it falls flat and you have all this character development, training, heartache, struggle, etc. and just throw it out the window.
Now all of a sudden he wants to be a badass again. I'm all for that, except I don't trust it. I can't rely on it. I have a sneaking suspicion the show will just throw him back to being lame. I get it, some of you will say "being a dad and being educated isn't lame!" And I agree. Unless we're talking about someone who has 10x the potential Goku has. Which he does. He surpassed Goku at an age where Goku was still at like 100 power level or less.
We'll also talk more about this in the "ridiculous" section.
Chi-Chi
Maybe some of you like her. I don't. It's the same tired joke over and over. Goku tries to train, Chi-Chi wants him to earn money instead of being Earth's literal savior. Goten wants to spend time with his dad and become as strong as him. Nope. Gotta study Goten.
Universe is in literal peril. Go study Goten. Don't train, Goku. Get angry over nothing, Chi-Chi. I don't know. I'm just tired of her. She rarely shows appreciation for everything her husband does (granted, he doesn't appreciate her in kind, and she does keep the family going. I'm all for "study Goten!" but it should be "study first, Goten, then you can train!" or something).
Meh. Again, this might be unpopular opinion.
48 minutes for the Tournament of Power
Not gonna bother tagging this, the spoilers are minor here. I'm not sure why Animes love doing this. "the earth will explode in ten minutes!!!" Thirty 20-minute episodes later - THE EARTH WILL EXPLODE IN NINE MINUTES AND THIRTY SECONDS!!!"
I mean, it's not like each episode has to actually take up 20 minutes of in-story time, but 48 minutes was a bit ridiculous. 2-3 hours would have sufficed. Small annoyance.
Others?
There are obviously more things they could have done better, what do you think? Discuss below!
THE RIDICULOUS
Okay, here's where we get into a slight rant I have. You've been warned. Also major spoilers here, back out now, I won't bother tagging everything that can be a potential spoiler, if you don't want anything spoiled, don't read on. Again, you've been warned.
Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza compared to Krillin, Tien, and Master Roshi.
Goku's power level is in the trillions by now, if not higher. Krillin is like 100k, the others are gonna max out at 1-10million, while A17/18 and maybe Gohan are in the billions. How are Krillin and the others MANHANDLING characters that are roughly in Goku's ballpark? Krillin is "lift a truck" strong, Goku is "can literally destroy universes back before he attained ANOTHER higher form" strong.
Strategy is a cop-out. They shouldn't have ignored these characters years ago if they wanted them to be relevant today.
I originally had a much longer argument on this subject, but I realized it was dominating the post, which I didn't want. This is supposed to be a discussion, not my soap box. Here are some snippets that I condensed from the argument:
Goku's PL at the Frieza Saga on first attaining SSJ was 150 million. Super Saiyan, we can surmise from snippets in the story, is simply a multiplier of your base power level, similar to Kaioken, but a transformation instead of a dangerous overexertion of your body. Each successive form is EXPONENTIALLY stronger than the last. SSGSS has reached at least trillions, and SSG was noted to have the power to destroy the universe.
Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza make up something like 99.9999997% (not an exaggeration) of the team's power, where Gohan, A17/18 make up a further 0.00000025%, and the other SIX characters are the 0.000000005%. Yet Krillin is holding his own against characters that Goku has to go "blue" against to overpower. K.
If League of Legends has taught me anything, it's that there's a point where strategy is thrown out the window because you're literally invincible. Goku is the equivalent of a level 18 Nasus that has been stacking for 24 hours, while Krillin is a fucking caster minion. Also Nasus has attained ranged abilities, dashes, blinks, and 25 more item slots. His Q doesn't just slaughter the caster minion, it basically destroys Summoner's Rift at this point.
- Perhaps Veigar would be a more appropriate comparison. Regardless, the point is made.
Hopefully Gohan remains badass and finds a new Saiyan transformation like he wants to do, that would be awesome. But I'm not holding my breath. He'll likely go back to being a scholar and be ignored until the plot decides he should be relevant again. I really want SOMEONE ELSE to attain SSG at least, so it's not always about just Vegeta and Goku. A third and even a fourth protagonist that are pushing each other's limits would add some much needed depth to the show, in my opinion.
Rant Over
It was long enough, so I'll leave the rest to you! What are your thoughts on The Ridiculous? Do you disagree with my rant? Do you have anything else to add?
