Hello all. The title is the short form of the question at hand. In long form: Are Grand Gestures (tm) appropriate? I was raised that (especially as a male) making a grand gesture was always inappropriate as it is too often used as a control method with the intention of making the recipient feel indebted to you. Even IF the intentions are genuine, the general act of a grand gesture is tainted by frequent malicious misuse. As such, I was raised to consider them to be distasteful, dishonourable, and always something to be avoided. However, one hears about grand gestures fairly frequently and even that they are considered romantic or typical of many courtships. So, when are grand gestures appropriate, if ever? Thank you.
