Week 4: Interesting Common - Winners
Welcome everyone to a Heroic Design Competition. I’m your host, Coolboypai, and I’m here to motivate your creativity and encourage some crazy designs. Each week, you’ll be given a prompt to design around, earning a point if your card fits the prompt and if I like it. At the end of February, you can redeem your points for Reddit Premium, Hearthstone packs, or even a Mega Bundle for the next set. You can participate in any round you want and submit as many cards as you want, but you can only earn 1 point each round, regardless of how many cards you submit.
Rules:
- You enter by making a post to the subreddit with the "Cool Comp" flair.
- Until the end of Thursday, you can post any number of cards based on that week’s prompt.
- You can earn a maximum of 1 point if one of your cards fits the theme and if I like it.
- After the week, there will be a public poll with the best designs for a chance at bonus points.
- Neither balance nor feasibility matter. The design of your card is more important than if it is competitive or if it can be coded.
- Subreddit rules apply, meaning appropriate title, art, and adequate effort.
I’ve always wanted to do a big event that pushes what is possible for custom cards and showcases the interesting side of design, beyond the game. I’m hoping that this event will entertain me in this regard especially with the crazy themes. I started designing custom Hearthstone cards with Un-cards, so that is the first prompt:
Design a fun Un-card
For those that are familiar with the terms, un-cards are not the same as DIY or Avante carde, even if they share similar elements. And although they are often light-hearted in nature, they are not just memes and still serve a gameplay function. To me, the best part of un-cards is that they play with game elements in unusual ways that the player does not normally expect. It is also important that they are fun to play with and against. Un-cards might reference things like flavour text or card backs that aren’t usually referenced. Or they might use elements such as half a mana or time that may have issues in “regular” Hearthstone. There’s plenty of examples in MTG and my own un-cards that I encourage checking out.
