Cringeofthering wrestler spotlight: Seven
Post Body

Overview

Seven was a very short lived gimmick given to Dustin Runnels, better known as Goldust, after he had left the WWF for WCW. I guess that the gimmick he was given was supposed to be some sort of unholy ghost that talked menacingly to a young child through his bedroom window, but we will get to that later. He wore a black (bondage?) coat, with a large brimmed hat, and painted his face entirely white. I am assuming that it was supposed to come off as dark and eerie, but came off more creepy (not in a good way), and odd. Also, I don't know what the point of the name was, maybe, Vinny Ru was a huge fan of George Costanza

Entrance

Even though he only made his entrance once, it sure was memorable. The lights go down, and you hear a raspy voice, saying, umm, I'm not exactly sure what he said, something like "hear me, you..." but I really couldn't understand it even after watching it a few times, IDK, maybe my ears are bad. A silhouetted man stands on the entrance ramp, briefly illuminated by walls of flames, then the unimaginable happened. He starts floating to the ring! OMG HOW DO THEY DO THAT! And no, it's not like you can see the cables holding him up around the 36 second mark. What really gets me is that he isn't moving at all, he is just staying still floating to the ring, sort of like when you try to move your cat by picking him up and holding him in front of you and walking. He enters the ring and grabs a mic. I also, just realised that I took time to write this all out in detail, when, most likely, you already knew what happened by watching the video. Oh well.

The "Shoot"

At the 1:54 mark it begins. Seven starts talking about how he left the WWF because of a stupid gimmick (even though the fans loved goldust and had a pretty damn successful career). He claims that he wanted to be just him, which WCW was known for having characters like that. If you want my opinion however, and that of the WCW higher ups, when he was just Dustin, I found him to be pretty boring and lacking something, even though his wrestling was solid, but I am just a guy sitting at his computer so my opinion really doesn't matter. He goes on to state that this gimmick is stupid, and isn't going to do it, then name drops his father, and makes an appeal to the back, that he is going to make everything a living hell. He ends the promo in a really badass way, by taking his old catchphrase, and replacing his name with it, that was pretty sweet.

The reason I put "shoot" into quotes is because, well, as they were known to do, WCW was apparently behind it all along. Around that time, ECW was really known for talking shit about their network on live TV, so I guess that WCW wanted to feed off of that, albeit in a safer way. I have heard rumors that Dustin and his father actually liked the angle, but after Dusty was fired (which was not kayfabe), they dropped it. Or because it received such a negative response, that they wanted to drop the gimmick, and still manage to do something with Dustin. No matter the reason, the character, Seven, was dropped.

Wrestling

Since he never wrestled a match as Seven, I will just run down his brief career in WCW. He feuded with Jeff Jarrett as "The American Nightmare," they fought at Starrcade 1999, where Jarrett defeated him in a "bunkhouse match," and then Terry Funk. He was then suspended for calling Vince Russo a "sawed-off midget" and an "asshole." He returned to feud with Jarrett again, this time just as Dustin Rhodes. He then fought in a tag match with his father, facing Jarrett and Ric Flair at the very last WCW PPV, Greed. Dustin won with an absolutely atrocious roll up on Flair.

Aftermath

WCW was purchased by the WWF in 2001, but they did not pick up his contract. He then wrestled for his father's promotion until he signed back with the WWF in December of 2001. The rest is pretty much history, he left, came back, did some other things, but overall the Seven character was just another chapter in the successful career of Dustin Runnels.
