Dev Hangout (Jan. 25)
Questions:
Q: I want my base to get attacked!
- We had that planned originally and we wanted monsters to come in and destroy your walls crafting stations, but since this is an ARPG you can imagine how much of a pain in the ass this would be seeing that if you were out questing and came back to see all of your base broken. Plus it would stop the mood because if you were out questing you would need to stop questing and go back to protect your stuff. It is still a possibility for the crashlands creator though!
Q: T-Shirts, where can we buy em!
- We are going to set up a website in the next few weeks. Currently we donât sell the t-shirts directly. In the past we have done production runs, so what weâll do (we also plan to have plushies, action figures, and other things!) is have people is sign up till we hit about 1k then once it spills over we will start the run knowing we will have most of those 1k people come back to buy the goodies
Q: What has been the most exciting thing so far about Crashlands
- That the servers werenât broken that much and that the game didnât flop!
How did you celebrate?
- Whisky & and Meat!
Q: How frequent will the updates be & How big
We have a 3 step plan:
Step 1: Bug fix Patch. There are about 60 bugs that any person has a 1/10 chance for a person to see on a play through. So we are going to fix that!
Step 2: Quality of life patch: All these little tiny features people have been requesting that we think will make the game better. Like things we really didnât have time to implement but will make things better.
Step 3: The creator patch: CRASHLANDS CREATOR! We want to make more games and add more games in the universe. Our plan is to have you guys help us with content like with the crashlands creator. We donât want to be stuck on one game forever. We want to be able to move on and have you guys keep the game alive by making your own stories and content inside of crashlands. Think of them like custom game modes/story modes.
Q: Dev Diary: What is happening?!
- Things are happening, the first episode is due sometime soonish! For those who donât know Dev Diary is about the game devâs over in St. Louis. Crashlands is the subject of the first season.
Q: Who made the music?
- Fat Bard, they made all the music in the game! (If you want to support them the most you can get it from band camp as it gives them the most proceeds!)
Q: Any plans to make bases more useful
- So currently bases are only not useful if you build them right in the center. Right now floors prevent creatures/resources from respawning. So they are useful if you use them away from that. Pro Tip: Ever go to a teleporter and see a big creature and it kills you every time? THROW SOME FLOORS DOWN!
Can every enemy be defeated with starting items?
- Kinda! So your weapon has a level on it and enemy creatures also have levels the higher the level they are than you it mitigates your damage. It allows the game to force you to no go for those big enemies. So it is possible, but it would take awhile. Like the boss battles would take an insane amount of time.
Q: If you had to add one more mob, what would it be?
- I wouldnât want a mob, but we did forget about something all enemies have two attacks until you hit the end of the tundra. We kind of forgot⌠No one noticed none of the testers none of us. If we could we would go fix them.
Q: Are there any St. Louis easter eggs in the game?
- Nope!
Q: Any game play tips, for veteran survival players?
- FORGET EVERYTHING, we have a lot of beef with crafting games. We like to approach genreâs that we donât like and try to figure out why we donât like them and make them better. Also PICK UP EVERYTHING
Q: In the Crashlands creator is it possible to enable wall damage for mob-like base protection?
- Maybe, the creator is going to used not just to make a story. But to make an awesome resource and awesome tools for it overall. It wonât launch for a few months, but you know we are really good at making things take forever. We will have an open enrollment beta for people to join. It will be first come first serve. If you are interested keep an eye out.
Q: Are there any super rare items or craftables that require tons of farming?
- Uhh.. Yes, thereâs some items that are hard to get that you can get from fishing you have a 1/1000 chance of getting a rare item per fishing attempt. If you are talking about a lot of effort the cross perk unlockables are pretty tough, the hardest ones being beat Towelfight 2 and the second one is getting to space in Flop rocket.
Q: If you had to develop again would you still use game maker?
- Heck yeah!
Q: Any creatures or npcs that are based on real life people?
- There is a cancer boss in the bawg, there is also the attribute on armor of antibodies. Thunder thighs for Seth.
Q: Broncos or Panthers
- You see if a panther fought a bronco the panther might be able to take down the bronco. Super bowl = animal fights right?
Q: What was the hardest part about the whole cancer process and how are you now?
- Everything is good health wise, minus the drugs, hair problems, and the entire stabbing pain that goes through my body once in awhile. The beard thing is worse though, because the beard is a man's true manliness. I also canât get a tattoo
Q: Gnomes?
- What Gnomes?
Q: What is the total time played in Crashlands right now. And what is your milestone play time.
- We only know play time for those who have logged in: So far itâs only 18 years of play time. We have extracted an adult human who can now smoke, drink, and vote. Quadropus took 1 month for 75 years. Letâs do this
Q: Is there a Joke with Hewgo that I am missing?
- No?..
Q: Are you guys going to ever be together in the same city?
- Adam should be moving in June-ish!
Q: Eta for co-op?
- Hell yeah! Half-past never⌠Listen making a game multiplayer is hard it would take us about another year to do that. What looks simple is very hard under the hood. With multiplayer every single action needs to be checked twice by the server. But itâs just we donât want to spend another year making a thing we didnât intend to have.
Q: Is there a possibility to separate movement from attack clicks so that when you misclick you donât move yourself into the attack zone?
- Okay for some reason pc users want to make this game much harder to control. Most people assume that we just took the mobile version and âportedâ it but in reality this was our intent all along. We wanted to have like this as we see it as the superior and best controls for this game over all. As a final statement anything we thought we could have made better that we could have done we would have done. Everything we did wasnât to mirror and favor one platform. We did everything to make sure that the games were the same.
Q: How long did it take to make Crashlands?
- For us? Two Years
Q: Is there anyway to add an option to disable scavenging/harvesting while in combat?
- We are sure that at some point you have been getting chased by a mob and still manage to collect resources while fleeing, changing this would not allow that.
Q: Why donât we give a quest tracker? Why arenât things handed to me like I want them to?
- We have thought about this a lot, and here is the reason why: Our questing system is designed around the failures of WoWâs quest system over time. In the beginning it was all based on text and context. Then they added the tracker that summarized the quest that just said âKill king 0/1â making the text obsolete. Changing the story and the depth to the game to just a task list. It kills the story. Your quest comes from you having a conversation with the NPC not a task list.
Q: Do you guys have any tips for making a game?
- Biggest tip is Pick the tool that fits best for you (3D Unity 2D Game Maker) and also make small games fist donât start big. You need to be able to make many really good small games before you can make one kick ass big game
Q: Why do games cost money?
- Because you need to pay to make a game, so we need to make money so we can keep making games.
Q: Have you sat down and considered what this game means to people?
- We made this game because it was important to us, the people in the beta got lost in it. We got notes from people who have so much going on, that this game gave them a distraction.
