Spec Copy question from a very novice copywriter

I'm beginning the shift in careers. Not diving in. I'm in the early stages of learning. And all the advice I get is "just do". This is where my question comes in.
When creating my own copy as practice should I do the layout and everything? I feel like I'm better with word over design. But I feel like I should at least be familiar with what designers do.
Thanks for any input. And advice is always welcome.
