Ben talks about civility in politics

Hello! I am happy to be here in Windsor, partially for our electoral prep, and partially so I could talk about a subject I’ve been thinking about. Specifically, I’ve been thinking about civility in politics. This has been something I have thought a lot about since the departure of the Former Speaker due to leaks. Here’s the thing. There is nothing wrong with debate and arguments in politics. Debate is good, and nobody is arguing against it. However, when you delve into insults on a person, including comparing them to a Nazi at one point, you get to a point that I would consider unacceptable. First off, you have the base level of incivility in comparing someone to a Nazi. That is unacceptable, obviously. But the second thing that makes me almost more annoyed is the fact that they did it through an anonymous leaking portfolio. If you are going to attack people, and this doesn’t just include the former speaker, you need to have the courage to say it yourself. Now, I feel like some people may ask “Well Ben, why think about this now? It’s long ago at this point.”. So, why now? Because it is important to be civil, and that doesn’t go away after the leaker disappears. It sets a bad precedent, and it needs to stop. As speaker, I will consult with members on a basic code of conduct and respect if there is interest in it. I hope that through these measures, we can keep parliament a respectful environment for all. Thank you for allowing me to speak on my thoughts about this.

A French Version was shortly released on his website:

Bonjour !
