[Build Help] I have an old creative labs PCI sound card. Is this thing redundant compared to today's onboard sound?

It's an SB0090 sound card like this.
I remember, back in the day (like 15 years ago) this thing really made a difference to the sound in games. But I have no idea if onboard sound has caught up with this quality. Is it worth installing in my new build (which I'm yet to buy). Do people even bother with seperate sound cards anymore?
Thanks
