I've been on this subreddit for an hour now and I've really enjoyed the conversation, content, and recommendations, so I'd like one for myself!
I'm basically all over the place as far as bourbon. I work at a liquor store and have access to great bottles and an employee discount. I entered the retail environment as the beer guy, and I believe that the years of tasting extreme beers primed my palate for more intense whiskeys, so I skipped a lot of the "beginner" bourbons and whiskeys.
I still don't know much about different distilleries, mash bills, etc though.
Stuff I've tried and liked: * W.L. Weller * W.L. Weller Antique 107 * Elijah Craig 12 Single Barrel * Ridgemont Reserve 1792 Single Barrel * Knob Creek 120 proof Single Barrel * Elmer T. Lee * George T. Stagg (freaking adored it) * Whistlepig (100% Rye Whiskey I know, but I really enjoyed it)
I really enjoy everything! I'm learning and love discovering what bourbon can taste like. If I had to pick I think I lean towards higher proof things, and would normally say I like high-rye, but looking at that list I may like wheated bourbons just as much.
I know I'll have some money to spend, so I'm looking for things in the $40-$70 price range, nothing too expensive. If there's something at the lower end that's just outstanding I'd love to save the money, but if there is a can't-miss bottle from the higher end I'm totally fine with that. A couple of bottles I've been looking at are Blanton's and Rock Hill Farms, but I know there's a lot more out there! Make a suggestion and I'll let you know if we carry it.
P.S., Internet whiskey e-peen wagging: Last year I was given a bottle of Jefferson Presidential Select 17 Year from the owner of my shop, but I've been afraid to open it because I wanted to have the palate to fully enjoy it. I'm thinking I'll have it side by side this year with whatever I purchase!
