Historic examples of dealing with “interesting times”

I have been thinking about how we live in “interesting times” and wondering if literature can help me figure out how others have coped. I’m not looking for big academic work on how people go through, but more the personal narratives. The time period I can think of is being German in the 1920s and seeing the Nazis rise, but I suspect my imagination is failing me. It doesn’t have to be a true story. I only speak English. Thank you!
