Hey everyone! My group has been enjoying a number of games, but they're all a bit simple, and I was hoping to get something with a bit more lasting appeal/re-playability through complexity. We're still new to the whole board game thing, however, so I'm a bit hesitant to jump into the more super-complex ones I'm most aware of.
The ones I've been looking up and am most torn between are Puerto Rico, Agricola, Dominion (although it doesn't seem that complicated at a glance), and Castles of Burgundy, but I'm open to all suggestions! I've even been thinking about Arkham Horror, but keep reading to play Elder Signs first, which looked a little boring/yahtzee-like in the Table Top episode I watched. Another I keep hearing about is Lords of Waterdeep, but it seems a bit on the short side.
Basically, I need something complex enough to satisfy the few of us that want something with a bit more substance, but not enough to turn off the more casual members of my group.
Number of Players: 3-4
Game Length: Ideally 1.5-3 hours, but longer is acceptable. Most games we play are in the 30-90 minute range, and I was hoping for something a little longer.
Complexity of Game: This is where it gets a bit complicated--I want complexity, but one of our members isn't overly keen on listening to rules, and may get overwhelmed with certain overly-complicated games.
Your Budget: Price doesn't really matter, perhaps $20-80.
Genre: I'm not sure if we need a specific theme/genre, as long as the game plays well. We're all open to new things, and just want something rewarding that can be replayed and enjoyed for a long while.
Competitive or Cooperative: Leaning toward competitive, but open to either. I own a number of cooperative games already (Pandemic, Forbidden Island, will be receiving the Battlestar Galactica game in the near future). We enjoy competition, but not direct confrontation. Things like Settlers of Catan and Ticket To Ride and Alhambra are great examples of the competition level our group seems to enjoy the most.
Games I Own/Like or Dislike: The most liked game our group plays is Ticket To Ride, followed by Pandemic, and then Alhambra or Settlers of Catan. We also play 7 Wonders, Bohnanza, Forbidden Island, and Carcassonne. A couple of us have tried Agricola All Creatures Big and Small, and enjoyed it, but found it already a bit complicated, which makes the original full game (the one I read most about) a little daunting, though I keep reading about a "family" rule set.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I'm still looking a lot of them up, but am currently trying to pick between Dominant Species and Puerto Rico!
Keep the suggestions coming, I'm starting up a list here. =)
Edit 2 (4/13): For anyone wondering, I ended up picking up Puerto Rico, which I love, and the group seemed to enjoy. Dominant Species is the very next game on the list! Thanks for all the suggestions!
