A lot of the time when I talk to people who have never trained and they ask what hobbies I do I’ll say bjj and a lot of the time the next question they ask is “what belt are you?” Or “oh cool are you a black belt?” My wife’s family often asks me how bjj training is and if I’ve been promoted lately, I always tell them nope still a blue belt and there response is usually “you’ve been doing it for a couple years now how long can it take? After all my nephew is 14 and he’s already a black belt!” I always just shake my head and try to explain that it’s not really comparable to put a karate black belt and bjj black belt in the same category, but they are as martial arts illiterate as it gets, the message doesn’t really get across. Anyone on here have a good way of explaining it in a way anyone could understand?
