To start this, the bicycle I am having work done too is in great condition and has no liability issues. Just needs to be serviced, new headset and a tune up and hydraulic brake work.
I've recently have come into a old bike of mine from 2005. It was my first real mountain bike that got me into the sport. It's a 2004 Raleigh Ram 3.0. Was a fun and great starting bike when I was 14.
Well fast forward 19 years and I've come across the bike again and just for nostalgia reasons want to have it brought back to life.
So I start by going to some local bike shops for a service and the work I need performed. First bike shop was clearly upset with me being there from the moment I walked in.
I great said employee and he asks me what I'm needing. I told him I'm needing a new headset and it installed and the hydraulic brakes also serviced with new pads.
He looks me up and down and then at my bike and says "our mechanics are pickey and high end and wouldn't waste there time repairing this bike".
Completely confused and shocked, I asked is it because the age or a liability issue. He then tells me "it's not a good enough bike for us to work on".
Astounded I bid him good day and left. Once in the car, I was still in disbelief a legit business would say this.
After the first shop I went to two more and again was approached by snobby shop sales men and mechanics. All told me they would waste there skills on repairing the bike. Again I'm in complete disbelief of this whole situation.
Good news a great shop called Rock Creek Cyclery in Hillsboro Oregon welcomed me with open arms and enthusiasm. They told me it's totally worth fixing up and even went over recommendations on repairs and parts. Let's just say the bike is getting a overhaul from top to bottom and they were so awesome!
But I can't believe the way bike shops do business these days and understand why most people avoid them. The customer service from 3 out of 4 of the shops was terrible. But that 4th shop is a gem and I hope stays in business a long time.
