Handlebar width relative to shoulders for long-distance comfortable, but brisk, riding?

Post Body

What relationship of handlebar width to shoulder width has generally proven effective for steady long-distance riding intended to eat up miles, such as randonneuring and touring?

My old road bars - long-used, but not currently mounted - are 40 cm C-C. This is about 2 cm more than my shoulder width. Both my "randonneur" and "gravel" bars are 44 cm wide, and I'm pondering whether that's interfering with my position and giving me additional "kite" air resistance.

Any observations or suggestions on what has proven effective for lightly to middling loads with drop bars on a non-racing bike?

Thank you
