This scene was the climax of the entire series
Post Body

Kim's bus scene. Its the culmination of all the show's storylines and speaks directly to all the themes.

This isn't a show about love and violence and cartels and lawyers and cons, though all those things are crucial. Ultimately, I think this show is about self deception and the lies we tell ourselves, and the willingness we have to keep the self sabotage going.

"Waterworks" was the climax. We've seen Jimmy workshop his poker face for 6 seasons, a poker face that took on a life of its own and morphed into an explosion of sleaze and personality. But in the scene where he nervously combs his hair and bounces a ball against the wall waiting for Kim to enter, and we as the audience can see just how pathetic and sad his tough guy act is when he says "have a nice life, Kim", it was the show being its most direct in showing you the purpose of Saul Goodman. This is Jimmy's mask, and he's making the choice to dive headfirst into it now.

But Kim, on the other hand, her poker face was made of steel ever since we met her. She rarely broke, and when she did, it was quick and she pushes it down after a few seconds or leaves the room. Its just not in her character to wallow and drop the mask. But just as we see Jimmy calcify his mask in the divorce paper scene, its contrasted by the bus scene, where we finally see Kim drop hers.

Or better put, the mask comes shooting off her face like an uncontrollable avalanche of emotion. We've never seen her like this, and I don't even think she's seen herself like this. Its a masterful scene and the show understands how pivotal it is, choosing to keep you there immersed with her as she attempts what she's successfully done countless times throughout the show, expel her painful or conflicting thoughts and stay in poker face mode -- but it just doesn't work anymore.

The out-of-focus guy in the background looking over at Kim breaking down, only to look back away once he realizes how serious her cries are, was such a nice touch. Everybody knows that feeling of embarrassment where you hope people aren't looking over at you in a time of peril like that, and that dude looking over felt so realistic. Then the hand reaching out for comfort. Kim Wexler requires the comfort of a stranger? What world are we living in? It feels so alien, but is completely earned and makes so much sense with her character arc.

If the main question of the show is, can you get off the bad choice road once you've boarded? That bus scene was the climax and gave you the answer -- you can, but don't expect to be the same person you were before.
