This might be a shot in the dark, but I'm blind, and I could use some help. (:

Hey /r/audioengineering!

I'm blind. I lost my vision about two years ago. I have a rare genetic eye disability which has robbed me of my site. It was a very slow process, and it finally finished the job two years ago. Since then, I have grown a very deep appreciation for the world of audio, and it has become somewhat of a passion of mine to try many different kinds of heapdhones and speakers.

I also used to love movies and video games. Unfortunately, losing your eyesight doesn't lend itself well to movies and video games as I'm sure you can imagine. Imersion is virtually fully gone, and it can be really rough to find immersion in other ways such as audio.

The thing is, there's only so much immersion I can find with stereo headphones, so that got me looking into some sort of virtual surround rabbit hole. When trying out those virtual surround programs however, there just seems to be something off about them that makes me just not like them very much, and I think I have finally narrowed down what may be causing that, and I think it involves HRTFs.

From what I can understand, most of these programs utilize generalized HRTFs that they created to suit the average persons head, but none of them are personalized and made for your own specific head/ear shape. From what I can understand, if you can get your hands on a fully personalized HRTF, it can be an absolute game changer, and the folks who have gone through the process of making this happen have reported very very nice results by the end, something akin to VR for your ears.

This got me looking into ways to make this Personalized HRTF dream a reality for myself, so I found a couple of programs that might make this work.

The first of which was called Impulcifer, which seems fairly promising. Second of which was Mesh to HRTF, which also seems very promising. The problem here though is that since I'm blind, it makes this really tough to accomplish. Impulcifer requires vision in order to properly place speakers around in your room from what I can gather, and Mesh to HRTF also requires you to import a 3D scan of your head into blender and clean up that model and remove stray hairs around the model head as well, which would be very difficult to impossible for me to accomplish.

So that's why I'm coming to you guys! I'm not super sure if this is the right community to ask, or if there might be another community that would be able to understand this a little better, but this seemed like perhaps the most suitable place to ask, so I figured I would give it a shot! Is there any chance that a member of the community would like to try to aid me in getting Mesh to HRTF set up properly? I've been trying to read through the tutorial tonight, and it seems as though it would be fairly easy to assist someone remotely with this, as I could take the 3D scan of my head myself and send it to someone else to do corrections in blender possibly? Not super sure, but if any of you do feel like offering a helping hand for a cool project I would love the help!!

Thank you so much if you read this far, I really do appreciate it and look forward to hearing back from any of you. <3
