I've been thinking about how ethnicity is shown in anime.
There are the obvious ways to show ethnicity -- skin colour is the main one.
I remember an interview with Samura Champloo director Watanabe Shinichiro in which he talks about intentionally using skin colour for his characters. It was used to show that some characters were native Japanese, darker skinned than the typical anime character's complexion.
Are there other features that jump out at you when you see them? Many intentionally "white" characters have blonde hair and blue eyes. Have you seen that in particular anime favourites of yours?
Is it true that white characters are drawn with long noses? I hadn't noticed that before, but now I might remember...
So, how can you tell that an anime character has a specific ethnicity?
If you haven't noticed it, that's fine; I'm curious about times when you have noticed it.
