Neighbors say it’s a vole but I say it’s a shrew

Neighbors have called exterminators claiming that they have voles in their yard. I have also found them but I am more inclined towards them being North American shrews. Their eyes are tiny and seem to be closed. Tiny tail and pointy snout. I can’t get myself to kill them or pick them up because grandpa always said they’re poisonous. This is the best pic I could take since they move around so quickly and don’t stay still.
