I have been in recovery for 16 years. I have had a number of sponsors, most with excellent results who kept me focused, in the steps, and service. I have sponsored several men, a few who have stayed sober, and of course I believe this has helped me in my sobriety.
I now have a sponsee, who I began working with a few months ago. He has been sober from alcohol for several years. His struggle has been some mental health issues. We are working through his steps, he has been taking external action to take better care of himself. He has a good knowledge of the program. But his life, in some ways has continued to be chaotic, and I have seen him suffer. He has taken suggestions, jumped back into service, and today I was humbled by his example of cleaning the toilets at our home group. This is not a guy I would have expected this from and it was done unprompted.
To see this man struggle and take firm action to not only maintain physical sobriety but seek next level recovery. It is inspiring. I know, because I have been this man. More continues to be revealed...
