AE: Who exactly gets the rank advancement credit for Boss cities after the kill?

Quick question: Could anybody explain to me which players exactly get the boss city credit for the rank advancement after beating a boss in AE?
On boss #2, I dealt quite a lot of damage, but didn't get anything. On boss #3 I dealt a bit of damage, and once the boss was dead I killed the next to last guardian team (so no killing blow whatsoever). I found out later that the "get T8 city" task was already completed despite me not owning a T8 city.
So does anybody know how it works exactly?
