Yesterday, my kids found two grackle nestlings on the ground under our pine tree. They were not fledglings! One did not survive the fall. There’s tons of stray cats in my neighborhood so I couldn’t leave the little guy on the ground and the nest is way too high to put him back. All I could think to do was to put him in a bucket and hang it in the Leyland cypress that’s right next to the pine. There was already nest material in the bucket because a Carolina wren started a nest and abandoned it, so he’s got some comfort. I’ve seen the parents feeding him, so that’s good. My biggest concern is the rain we are expecting on Wednesday and the storm this weekend because he bucket has no drainage. Do you have any advice?
