I’m a total wig newbie. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in December and I’m currently recovering from a double mastectomy. I also found out a few days ago that I’ll be needing chemo 🙃
I’ve never purchased a wig before (except on Amazon for Halloween) and I have no clue where to begin.
I’m going to try to save as much natural hair as I can by cold capping, but have been told the specific infusion I’ll be getting is quite harsh on hair and I’ll be lucky to keep 50% of it. Because the cold cap is pricey (and my insurance doesn’t cover it), I don’t want to spend too much on a wig. I’ve seen gorgeous ones made in Australia (Goldylost) that I LOVE but can’t justify spending over $1k when I’m trying to save my hair. However, as a surfer, I love the natural, effortlessly beachy look of their wigs!
Is Wigshe an ok company? Where can I find a good quality wig for $500 or less? I don’t even know what questions to ask. What else do I need to know?!
That’s so sweet! Thanks for checking in! I’m halfway through chemo and have lost probably 60% of my hair. So far I’m able to disguise it well with a low pony & hair fibers (Toppiks) but I did purchase a couple wigs off Amazon that I have just in case. Feeling great now! My chemo is every 3 weeks and it really only keeps me down for a few days after each infusion.
Thank you! I didn’t know surfing/swimming with a wig was even a possibility so I haven’t thought about it, but I’ll probably just wear a surf hat so I don’t have to bother with it. I am super active though! And run boats for work often, so I’d need a wig that can really stay on through the activities. I could go either way on human vs synthetic as long as it looks natural! And $500 is the very top end of the budget 😅 if I can find a good quality one for less I’d much prefer it!
Thank you for the tips! Starting off with an less expensive one sounds like a good idea

Jeez..I’m so sorry you’re going through that. Cancer blows. For me it’s been hurdle after hurdle and every time I think I see the finish line I get worse news. Thanks for the tip about the Raquel wigs! I’ll check that out. The cold capping seems to be a crap shoot…some women still end up losing most of their hair and some do really well with it so I’m taking the pricey gamble. I’ve never heard of wigs being prescribed! I might ask my doctor about that. He did also mention I should cut my hair before starting chemo so I’ll be chopping mine into a nice summer bob in a couple weeks. At least we’re getting through this and chopping our hair in the nice, warm, sunny weather (if you’re in the northern hemisphere)! Although I would’ve loved hiding behind a beanie in the winter, I should still be able to get by with a ball cap until I decide to go for a wig. Good luck to you!! Hope chemo is smooth for both of us. I thought my mastectomy would be horrendous but I’m actually getting by with minimal pain and healing quite quickly!
