Spain, 14 March, 1941
President of the Republic, José Díaz Ramos, made an unannounced appearance today at the training range of the Guadalajara Rifleman-Workers Organization, bringing with him his own rifle and ammo. Despite the commotion around his visit, he came with only a few guards and some family, made no speeches, and insisted that he was only here to train with the paramilitants. Despite his requests otherwise, when he stepped up to the firing line, others there gathered to watch him take a few shots with his 1916 Mauser rather than continuing their business. He fired off five shots in succession, and, seeing that there wasn't anyone else firing on the range, went to go retrieve his target.
Silence briefly reigned once Díaz returned with the paper target, showing that, at a range of 500 meters, he had managed to get an expert shot grouping. Then it exploded into excited commotion, with bystanders repeatedly asking how he learned to shoot so well. Backed into a corner, he confessed that, during the Civil War, he picked it up once others in the SWF expressed concern about his personal safety against attackers or attempted assassinations. He, at the request of the people, repeatedly demonstrated this same mastery with a rifle from various ranges and stances. Eventually, somebody volunteered a Pistol Isard that they had, and asked him to show off his skills with a sidearm. Showing that he had obviously trained in this, too, he cleared the pistol course at the range without any flubs, shooting either two handed, one handed using his non-dominant hand, likely in order to protect it for writing. At the request of the crowd, he did show off his ability to dual wield revolvers and still hit every shot at 50 meters, though at this point it must be pointed out that he was looking a little flustered. After a flurry of requests to show off alternatingly a quickdraw method, his skills with an smg, a hunting shotgun, a combat shotgun, an Afghani Jezail that the rangemaster kept as a souvenir, and a captured German machine gun, José Díaz clarified that he was more looking to be here to just relax and practice with his rifle some more, and the range-goers at last, in respect of his wishes, relented. The rest of the day at the range was largely uneventful for Díaz, albeit he continued to shoot expert shot groupings for the whole of the time.
