Spain, Late-1938
It was a warm winter this year, but the room where the press conference was taking place was oddly cold. The Rifleman-Workers shuffled awkwardly while flanking the stage that Jose Diaz Ramos would be giving a speech. Jose Diaz himself looked rather disheveled; he wore a mushed side cap and combat webbing, as he had been away to survey the state of the frontlines, visit his family in the newly liberated sections of Sevilla, and get into an argument with Durruti, before returning to give this conference. On the stage he was joined by Dolores Iburrari and various other members of the PCE, PSOE, Orthodox Syndicalist factions of the CNT, and a surprise appearance from the PNS. In contrast to the normal politicians and scruffy paramilitants, Ramiro Ledesma and his cohorts were snappily dressed with black turtlenecks and pants. To be honest, they looked out of place, and rather silly.
Cameras flashed as Jose Diaz stepped up to the podium to give his remarks, flanked by those elements of the SWF who had gathered here today in support:
"The Republican Government and the Worker's Front are working towards a similar goal; the crushing on the Monarchists and the Reactionaries. This is a shaky alliance, but, with the recent Republican and SWF cooperation in the acquiring of the hated tyrant, Alfonso, as well as our cooperation in the recent offensive, it has become apparent that we must make moves to reconcile our differences if we are to succeed. The Republican Government is not a worker's government, that which we work for, but we here on this stage, and indeed, most of the Worker's Front, are of the opinion that it can be quickly influenced to become as such. So, despite it all, the Republicans are indeed, a more legitimate government than the reactionary monarchy, and we will recognize them as such."
Ramos took questions as cameras went off, before turning the stage over so his counterparts in other parties could make speeches of their own. Outside, the weather had taken a sharp turn from lukewarm to cold, and now, inside the conference room seemed almost snug and warm in comparison, owing in part to all the people jam-packed inside.
Now, facing a United Front, it was merely a matter of time until the Reactionaries broke.
