Chord Families and Substitution
Post Body

Within a given key there are 7 possible chords. You will find that every chord can be substituted with another that sounds different but has the same function. This is where the idea of chord families comes in. Chords that share certain notes are grouped into families.

Let's use the key of C for example. C (C E G) shares two notes with Em (E G B) and two notes with Am (A C E). So, C can be substituted for Em (iii) or Am (vi). When you add the seventh to Cmaj7 (C E G B), you will see that Em (E G B) is the same as Cmaj7 without the root note. These alternative chords with the same function create new colors in a progression.
