While I know that before the electric telegraph there were ways to rapidly convey information across long distances, these earlier methods seem to be confined relatively simple information, and required everything to go right in order to achieve optimal speed.
With the electrical telegraph making it possible to send detailed messages in near real time across hundreds or thousands of miles, do we see political leaders and high level commanders assuming a more direct role in managing the front (micromanaging)?
