How did the Soviet military in the 1980s envision the role of Warsaw Pact armies in a theoretical NATO invasion?

While I refer to Warsaw Pact armies as a whole in the title, I understand that the quality and political reliability of each one was unique. From what I've read the Soviets had a high opinion of the professionalism and reliability of the East Germany Army. But generally speaking, were Warsaw Pact Armies expected to just hold the line against a NATO invasion until Soviet deployment, or was there an expectation that they would do more than that? Did the size, organization and investment into respective Warsaw Pact armies reflect their prospective roles in the event of a NATO invasion or were domestic political and economic factors responsible for variations between them?
