Hello everyone.
Obligatory first-time poster, long time lurker. Yadada. Onto the story.
Cast: Me = duh, FE = Female Employee, CS = Cool Supervisor, EH = Entitled Husband, EW = Entitled Wife
I've worked at Tim Hortons (the Canadian version of Dunkin Donuts) ever since I was 15, and boy do I have a lot of stories to tell you guys. This one just happened recently, so it's still fresh.
I had to move recently to a new town and had to leave my job at the other Tim’s but decided to stick with the franchise since I didn't want to do new training.
At Tim’s, there's three stations you have the option of being on: front cash (FC), sandwich station (SS), and drive thru (DT). You're supposed to have knowledge of each station, but since we have such a high turnover rate, not everyone knows how to do SS. Only me, and four other people know how to do SS in the entire store on both shifts.
Now, anyone who has worked in fast food knows what it's like to be short-staffed, especially during festivals/sports events, and that night was like no other. We were supposed to have 8 people, but only had 4 (1 on FC, 1 on SS, 2 on DT). Since I was the only person who had knowledge of SS, I was primarily tasked with making sure it was clean, stocked, and making food whenever someone ordered it. I was helping both FC and DT by grabbing drinks/donuts/whatever else they needed. But, that's difficult to do when you have a lineup out the door and wrapped around the store. We had an entitled couple come in and start ripping through our FC worker. I was nearby, so I could hear the entire thing.
EM: Ugh, I can't believe you're taking so long! Why the hell aren’t you doing your job!
FE: Excuse me
EH: Don't you know its rude not to serve guests! We know you're intentionally slowing us down so you can make us miss the event!
FE (Looks at me in shock): Listen, things are busy, and it doesn't help that we don't have the staff needed to make things faster. If I could just-
EW: Well why not! I mean (gestures to me) you have a fat, dumb employee right there! (mutters) I can't believe I'm paying to have (insert unacceptable term for mentally challenged people) like him work here.
Now, I am by no means stupid. Fat, maybe. But not stupid.
Me: Ma'am, I'm sorry you feel that way. Unfortunately, I'm doing the best I can to help FE with the line, and you standing here, yelling at my co-worker isn't necessarily helping either.
EH: YOU DON'T TALK TO MY WIFE LIKE THAT!
EM: YEAH! I DEMAND A MANAGER!
And, so it begins.
Now, my supervisor is a pretty chill dude. He's one that makes you do whatever you want (limitations of course), if you're doing some form of work. He's been listening in on the conversation the entire time and makes his way over as she says this.
CS: Ma'am, could you please stop yelling so I can hear myself. You're making the other guests uncomfortable with your yelling.
EM (ignoring him): Finally! Someone who’s not a (insert same slur here)! These two (points at FE and Me) have been rude to me and have been refusing me service! I demand that I get my meal free, and I get a formal apology from this man (glares at me) for calling me fat.
Me: I said - (gets cut off by CS)
CS (smiles smugly): You heard her Me, give her a "PROPER APOLOGY" for the "TRAUMA" you caused...
He knows I'm a smartass to rude guests. Finally, something I can get behind.
Me: Ma'am, I am so sorry I've ruined your experience here (EM looks as if she's won) by having to listen to you yell at both me and my co-worker for the past 5 minutes as you call us derogatory terms the entire time.
EW: BUT - (I interrupt)
Me: And I really hope that you and your husband can enjoy your business, but you're going to have to do it elsewhere, as we have guests that really want their drinks, and are more than willing to treat us like actual human beings.
CS is just sitting there laughing while the ED stares there in shock and the EM is furious.
EW: I HAVE A RIGHT TO BE HERE! I AM A PAYING CUSTOMER, AND I KNOW THE OWNER!
Me: So, do many other people, and you're still not getting served. Goodbye, we hope you have a wonderful day!
EW: THIS ISNT OVER!! I'M CALLING THE OWNER TONIGHT TO COMPLAIN!
She finally leaves with EH. The rest of the night was still bad, just not as bad as that encounter. I get asked what happened the day after and tell them exactly what happened. They said CS had already left a message explaining the situation, so it was cool.
Thanks for reading!
