Trying to help a friend get the game set up

My roommate saw me playing and became interested. Directed him to the itchio page and he downloaded extracted, but when he opens the game it black-screen crashes and comes up with an error box that simply says "Fatal Error, game will close".
Only difference between our systems that I know of is the windows version (he's on 11, I'm on 10). Other than that, he's got a better graphics than me. Any ideas? Searches have brought up nothing as far as help.
