I think I'm too stupid to do this. The endless tech issues surrounding trying to get setup to stream like we want are seriously frustrating.
I am not a sound engineer. Or a videographer. Or a graphic designer. I'm learning as I go, here.
Background: Husband wants to do a couples gaming stream - each of us has a webcam, streaming his xbox through elgato, we both have mics and are talking to each other and any viewers. We're doing this all through my PC. I thought it sounded fun, I love gaming with him, we did something similar during COVID, and I get to wear makeup, so I'm down.
We have everything worked out except the damned microphones. And this took a few weeks. I'm not great at the tech side, but I'm our best bet at geting it set up properly, so I'm learning as I go. And I may be too stupid to figure out how to make this work.
Right now, we're doing everything through OBS on my PC - which isn't super high end or anything, so we're pushing all the limits here. We sit in recliners about 6 feet apart -- this can't change.
His mic is an Elgato Wave 3, mine is a Fifine xlr/usb. My microphone (the cheapo $50 one) is awesome. It picks up my voice fine, and doesn't get any background noise. His mic (the expensive Elagato Wave 3) sucks. It picks up my voice at normal levels even with it turned properly and me trying to speak quietly. Each mic is plugged into a different USB board on the PC as well (one in front, one in back). We can hear both mics on the stream and VOD, but the quality is crap because his mic is picking me up as well.
Things I've tried that haven't worked:
getting us both microphone arms to get the mics closer to our faces.
putting noise suppression filters on both (and either/or) mics in OBS.
putting noise gates on his mic in OBS (I don't know if I did this right, but it didn't help).
speaking super quiet -- yeah, I'm a loud mouth, that didn't work. my voice just carries.
using the WAVE LINK software as the input and adding that to OBS... nope.
Things I'm considering:
Just letting his mic pick me up and we'll have shitty audio. It echoes, but if my mic isn't on, it's not the worst I've heard. I'll just be background noise, I guess?
Buying a rolling clothes rack to throw some blankets on to block the sound between us?
Getting a sound mixer of some type, but what kind? And can it take two USB mics as inputs? This sounds expensive.
Getting XLR microphones, but won't that require a sound mixer as well? Mine says it's XLR/USB, so maybe it will work with another one that's similar? This also sounds expenive.
Throwing everything with the word Elgato on it in the trash. I seriously hate them at this point. Everything is an effing FIGHT to get it to work.
I need ideas or suggestions, please. And very, very basic instructions, please. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please.
