So I've been rewatching Kurosawa's films and I just got to Red Beard, and I absolutely love it, even more than when I first saw it. I didn't remember much about it from when I first saw it in high school, but I did read some opinions on it when I started my Kurosawa revisitation and saw complaints that it was melodramatic and sentimental, which after watching it I don't get. Nothing in it is really saccharine, and I feel like the touching moments, like when the young girl is nursing Yasumoto are earned. One moment in the film that I think is one of the most beautiful moments in any film I've seen is when Sahachi is renuited with his wife at the market. The way the wind blows the chimes is one of the best ways to express pure joy I've ever seen. What you guys think of the film?
