First off, I’m very fortunate to be in a rare group of teachers in our country that work in an amazing environment with an amazing community, leadership, and kids (for the most part). Of course the stereotypical lack of pay, too much on our plates, etc., still exist, but I’m very happy with my current position.
I love getting ideas from social media, and there are some great teachers out there who are actively teaching and actively giving advice, creating content, putting in the work and I’m happy to support them!
What really grinds my gears are these “teacher influencers”, vloggers, tiktokers, etc., who became so successful with helping others, they left teaching all together, but their entire platform is still about teaching hacks, classroom management, setup, routines, and all that. They’re writing books, they’re doing speeches, apparently being a comedian is something else some are doing now. I’m sure we can all identify one or more of these people in our head. Why are you capitalizing off of a job you’re choosing not to do? You’re not in it for the kids because otherwise you’d still be in a classroom.
Anyway, thanks for coming to my vent and my Ted Talk. For those of you who are still putting in the work and producing fun/resourceful content while taking on the bearings of our job, BIG KUDOS to you!!! And if you’ve left teaching to be an influencer…. You’re literally doing the same thing as “receiving PD from someone who hasn’t seen a classroom in years”.
