I just love when random people come to chill in my hotel...

Post Body

So, I love the hotel I work at. It's part of a larger chain, but the company that manages this specific hotel is wonderful. We do have some issues with fraud, which is the primary type of post I make. I'm a complainer, what can I say? Anyway, tonight has truly been an adventure. Not a fun one.

I keep the doors locked at night. If a guest forgets their keys they can pick up the phone and give me a last name and room number. If you don't have one, you can leave. No, we do not have a public toilet for you to use. No, you cannot come in to get some coffee. The amount of times I say no to people is ridiculous. However, those beautiful, locked glass sliding doors keep me from dealing with with a face-to-face confrontation.

About 2:45am the doors that normally only open to keycards just open up and stay open. This happens sometimes and we are working on fixing it. A temporary fix is inserting the master key twice and the doors close back up.

Back to what happened. So, I notice a dude in baggy pants and a hoodie enter and just walk back for the elevators. Normally I would just let it go. Not today, because the doors were open. That, and I know 90% of the people here this week are with the US census bureau. He looked scuffed up and dirty. So, before I start my audit I decide to do a walk around the building. Every floor, even the stairwells and storage closets. Once I got to the second floor(started from the top down), I see this same dude curled up in the ice machine room on his phone. Let's call him HG1 for homeless guy 1.

Me: Hello. Sorry to bother you, but you can't loiter here.

Hg1: Um, I'm a guest. I just got locked out of my room and I'm trying to get my wife to answer her phone.

Me: Oh, well if you have your ID I can make you a new key card.

Hg1: No, that's fine. It's under her name anyway.

Me: If you're married, I'm sure you have the same last name. That will suffice if you can show an id.

Hg1: [fake checks his pockets] Oh, I must have left it in the room. She kept her maiden name anyway. It probably wouldn't help.

Me: Okay, how about you give me the room number and name. I'm sure I can pull it up to verify the information.

Hgi1: Look lady, I'm just trying to relax. Can you leave me alone?

Me: I'm sorry, but I need to know you have a room here.

Hg1: You should be respecting my privacy.

Me: Alright, I'm going to ask that you come down to the lobby with me. I need to verify your room number and name or you have to leave.

Hg1: I don't want any problems. It's cold outside, so you can't kick me out that's illegal. I have squatters rights.

Me: Sir, that doesn't apply to businesses. I am going to call the police now.

As soon as I pull out my phone this dude throws a fit and I follow him down the stairwell and out of the hotel. Ugh, I was behind for the night. Oh well, I would get things done before 7. Or so I thought.

So, I unlocked the doors a little early so I didn't have to let breakfast Stagg in because I'm a little behind. That was my mistake. About 50 mins ago an older looking, obviously homeless man came into the hotel, saw breakfast wasn't ready, then sat down in the lobby. I went out to greet him and see what he wanted. Let's call him homeless guy 2.

Me: Good morning. Can I help you with something?

Hg2: I just came in to get warm. Don't mind me.

Me: I'm sorry, but I can't allow you to loiter in my lobby. (I like the word loiter, if you can't tell).

Hg2: I'm not loitering. Loitering is mischievous.

Me: that's not what it means. I'm just telling you that it's policy. We have guests and unless you are one of them I need you to leave.

Hg2: I'm a member of your honor system. I always stay at the [wrong brand hotel]!

Me: I'm sorry, but that hotel isn't part of our chain. Regardless, even an honors member would have the respect to understand that the guests don't want someone loitering around in the lobby.

Hg2: you don't know anything! I'm a super high tier and I will never stay here. This is ridiculous!

He gets up and walks out complaining about how he's being treated.

You know, I try not to be an ass but these guys know they can't just chill out in a nice hotel. I don't understand the thought process. I get that it's cold, but my job is to make sure everyone feels safe.

It's just annoying wasting my night arguing with people. I'm done ranting. I just am annoyed and can't finish my job until I get it all out.
