Is a steam deck good as a first gaming pc?

Thinking of buy a deck recently and not to sure if it’s the right idea, was looking for help. I haven’t owned a gaming pc before, but would love to play so pc games and emulators. Would it be better for me to get a pc or laptop specifically for gaming or is the steam deck value for money. Can I get a good pc for a similar price to the deck, and would prefer not to build one myself.
