Carrot theif

Can anyone help? I'm trying to catch the spirt stealing carrots, I got the carrot cake and wait at the field at 4 am as I'm supposed but it doesn't turn up? Anyone else have this problem?
Edit: I finally managed it! While I had spoken to everyone I needed them to be in there homes when they spoke about the shop. Next morning the spirit turned up. Thanks for helping everyone!
