I received the following mod message (on r/SpaceCoastR4R) from someone a few hours ago:
I think it's stupid that your restricting all of r/spacecoast to just Brevard county. I live in Saint Lucie and I come to this reddit to look for and sometimes post myself you just made it so I can't post. There are more than just brovard that is considered space coast
I responded with the following message which I then decided to post here in duplicate to help clarify for anyone else who may have similar questions / sentiments as it also applies to r/SpaceCoastSwingers:
"Space Coast" is actually a moniker for Brevard County which is comprised of the cities of Cape Canaveral, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Grant-Valkaria, Indialantic, Malabar, Melbourne, Melbourne Beach, Merritt Island, Mims, Palm Bay, Rockledge, Satellite Beach, Scottsmoor, Sharpes, and Titusville. It is also home of the Patrick Space Force Base.
Fun fact: Brevard county was given the "Space Coast" moniker because it is home to the John F. Kennedy Space Center, and that is also why we were assigned the "321" area code (as in "3, 2, 1... lift off!).
If you live in Saint Lucie, then you are in Saint Lucie county, and that is part of the Treasure Coast which is comprised of Indian River, Martin, and Saint Lucie counties. With Saint Lucie being located over an hour away from the Space Coast, it doesn't and wouldn't make sense to allow posts from people who live there.
Most people who post in R4R subreddits are looking to meet up and make meaningful connections with other locals; that is, people who are within a reasonable driving distance. Most folks simply aren't interested in meeting up with people who live an hour or more away. The time/cost of travel is a gamble which most see as being somewhat prohibitive, especially considering it can all be for nothing if the other person flakes and you get stood up.
Not to mention, if we opened it up to folks in the Treasure Coast, it would be just as easily argued that we should also open it up to others residing in Jacksonville and Orlando, or even as far as Tampa or West Palm Beach, etc., and that would defeat the entire purpose of creating these communities in the first place.
Our reason for creating r/BrevardR4R and r/SpaceCoastR4R nearly 3 years ago now was that, until then, there were no communities for Brevard County / Space Coast residents. All of us here in the Space Coast had to resort to posting in r/FloridaR4R, r/OrlandoR4R, r/JacksonvilleR4R, or elsewhere. As a result, most of the people actually seeing our posts lived an hour or more away, and that can be a very frustrating and challenging when you're trying to meet new people.
I would encourage you to look for communities closer to home. HOWEVER, though you may not create posts in our communities, you are still more than welcome to join and otherwise participate in our community and respond to any post you wish by leaving a comment! As they say, your mileage may vary, but you may get lucky and find someone who is open to meeting someone who lives over an hour away.
P.S. thank you for reaching out. I will post this question/answer in our communities to help clarify for anyone else who may have the same question/sentiments.
