2nd child because sibling has 3
Post Body

Hi all - Happy Holidays!

I posted this on another group but a member directed me to this one so reposting here.

I'm a new member so apologies if this topic has been tackled before but I would like some advice if possible please.

Long story short, I'm 41 with a 1yr old son, and my wife is 37. We planned to have only 1 child but we recently learned my only sibling, younger sister, is having twin boys to go along with their 1yr old son. So she and her husband will have 3 boys and we will only have 1.

They live about 6-7hrs away so our personal interactions are limited to 4-5 times a yr.

I feel guilty that our son will see his 3 cousins (who again all are boys) and feel lonely. Additionally I feel he will be somewhat dependent on them as they are his only 1st cousins that live close by and his 2nd cousins we aren't too close with (and they are older). My wife's sister lives in another country and her kids are 10yrs older than ours.

Given that our son will basically only have 3 1st cousins and no other immediate family, is that good enough reason to have another child? Financially we are stable, luckily, and my wife can quit her job if we have a 2nd.

My/our only motivation for a 2nd would be for him to not be alone. If it were up to me, selfishly, I would wish my sister only had 1 kid and so he and ours can be partners in crime.

Apologies if this doesn't make any sense or is stupid. Hearing her happy news should be a cause for celebration but my 1st thoughts, selfishly, are to how it affects my son.

Any/advice would be appreciated. And please don't berate me too much if you think I'm an idiot.

I haven't really conversated with my wife about this for the record but I'm pretty confident she would have a 2nd if she also determined if that was whats best for our son.

Many thanks!
