After arriving to a sitting job for a new client, they tell me that the 5 month old giant dog that they got 1 week ago is not kennel trained and can not be left at all for the next 24 hours. I tell them it’s fine since it’s only 24 hours and I didn’t really have a choice anyways, since I wasn’t told until I got to their home. This client travels for work every other week so I’m not entirely sure why they thought it was a good idea to buy a dog and then leave a week later with no kennel training, but I digress. I just arrived to their house today for a for 2 night sitting and I am told again that he cannot be left alone at all because the kennel freaked him out so many times that he has hurt himself trying to escape 🙃 I’ve done jobs in the past where I wasn’t able to leave at all and it’s hard on my mental health to not be able to leave and decompress for a couple hours. Or to just go see my own pets and family. Now the owner has just asked if they should just cancel their trip and come back home if “I’m not comfortable”. I explained how I felt about the situation and now they’re coming back home in a couple hours. Now I feel like an asshole.
Edit: At the meet and greet I was told he was being crate trained and would be ready for the crate by time of the sitting. Owner said I could leave for an hour or two no problem. I was unaware of any issues with the crate until I arrived for the sitting. I’ve been doing this for 7 years so of course I know to ask these questions, this problem was not due to my negligence.

Why would people get a dog or puppy, and immediately leave? .... In my personal case, my ex and I got the puppy, and he left for a week 2 days later. I stayed home with the dog. He is a blah blah blah and he was called in last minute for work. Family emergency? Had this trip planned and the breeder is the one who tells you when they need to go home? All valid reasons.
