Not sure if people talk about this often, but I feel like RWBY's soundtracks do a better job at elaborating on the characters than the actual show does.
Not to say the show is terrible at this, at least not all the time, but with every character track that I go back and listen to, I understand and relate to their motives and sentiments a lot better than the way the show executes their struggles.
- "Cold" really drives home just how much Pyrrha has done for Jaune since they first met, in some cases in ways we never really even considered, which only makes her passing all the more heart-shattering compared to the already heart-shattering death we already saw on-screen.
- "Time To Say Goodbye" elaborates so much on the mysteries behind the ethics and motives of Beacon as well as on Team RWBY's decision to take their own actions against the White Fang, while the actual volume just sort of rolls with the latter without repercussions and doesn't even mention the former at all.
- "This Life Is Mine", even down to its instrumentals slowly becoming more powerful alongside the lyrics, goes through every stage of Weiss's family crisis before finally reaching her eventual rebellion in a way that feels more impactful than her (admittedly still solid) interactions between her and Jacques and what comes from that later on.
- "Armed and Ready", a five-minute song, honestly feels like it spends more time on Yang's trauma, recovery, motivations and slow return to form more than the actual volume does.
- "Bad Luck Charm" explores Qrow's feelings towards his semblance while the actual volume sort of just briefly brings it up without really elaborating on it beyond "it sucks", and it's pretty much forgotten about once he actually joins RNJR.
- "Lusus Naturae" actually... you know, gives us a reason to relate to Merlot. This song alone turns Merlot from generic crazy mad scientist to someone who... actually makes a solid point in terms of what he wishes to do with the Grimm and it's kind of a shame that he went mad from his rejection when trying to do it. This I think is the most obvious example, and I don't think anyone would argue against me when I say that it's the most interesting part of Grimm Eclipse's story.
Not to shit on Miles and Kerry or anything, some of the things these songs represent are still executed pretty well in the show proper, but I can't think of many soundtracks that are not only so on-point in terms of their lyrics representing their source material, but elaborate on it in ways the source material doesn't quite do. Major, maaaajor props to Jeff Williams on that note. He's a great composer but I feel even more "oomph" from his songwriting beyond that. Not quite sure if he gets enough respect for that part of his music but it's still worth it to say it as many times as possible anyway.
