Arthur vs. the game

Currently in Chapter 3 of my first playthrough. I love it, but I feel like Arthur and what the game wants are at odds. Arthur says don't kill/rob innocent but I mean seems like the game is a lot about that. Outside you know, story missions, do you rob/kill random strangers or just leave it be. Obviously random robbery doesn't offer much in terms of money.
