Yesterday I rescued two rattie girls, I have no idea how old they are but they are little but not tiny. My old coworker messaged me saying she had them and if someone wasn’t able to get them she was going to put them outside. I couldn’t have that happen. They weren’t in the best conditions and barely had food. Luckily the ratties themselves are clean and lice free. My boyfriend bought them a cage and everything that they’ll need. The thing is, they are extremely skittish and have no interest in us. I put the cage in my room since I have roommates. I’ve been trying to be mindful of noise since that seems to be a big one, even tv is making them skittish. How would I go about building trust? Everything I did with my rats from when I was a teenager isn’t working, they’re too scared. I had built this little box play area and they won’t even go in it, I left the cage open and they’re curious but if they hear anything they scurry back inside. They do take treats from me but sparingly usually I have to lay it down. I’ve been really gentle and quiet but even me sitting in front of their cage they don’t like. Any advice? I know it’s not going to happen instantly, I just want to make sure they have out of cage time but I can’t even get them to come out.
also for my post history cause I know someone will point it out, I got a new fully remote job
