How long does one stay an adjunct professor for until they became a full fledged professor?

I recently added my professor to linkedin. According to his profile, he has been an adjunct professor in my college since 2004. I read th at adjuncts make roughly 20k a year. My friend works at walmart and makes around that much. The only difference is that adjuncts have phds. I am guessing adjuncts stay adjuncts until someone hires them? Are universities now hiring adjuncts instead of full tiem professors to save money? What are pros and cons of each?
